ew Yorker Harley Spiller began collecting Chinese restaurant menus in 1981. Over the next three decades, he amassed about 10,000 menus from all 50 US states and more than 100 countries. The oldest dates back to 1896, and about 1,000 predate 1960. He became a Guinness World Record holder in 2005 for possessing the "largest collection of menus" and has held multiple exhibitions of these food artifacts, which illustrate the evolution of Chinese food in the US and around the world. The University of Toronto Scarborough purchased the collection in 2014. His book,
Keep the Change: A Collector's Tales of Lucky Pennies, Counterfeit C-Notes, and Other Curious Currency,
published in 2015, also tells the story of his journey as a collector.
